Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has defended Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform against heavy criticism by Epic founder Tim Sweeney.

Sweeney had said that UWP was the "first apparent step towards locking down the consumer PC ecosystem and monopolising app distribution and commerce". He later said the new platform was the "most aggressive move Microsoft has ever made".

Spencer had this to say on Twitter.

"Windows has always been an open ecosystem welcoming the contributions of hardware and software partners, and will always continue to be."

"UWP is a fully open ecosystem, available to every developer, and can be supported by any store."

He added that we'll hear more about the "Universal Windows Platform at //build later this month".

Of course he is going to say UWP is the best.

If he did not, he would be fired.

I think it depends how difficult they make it to download programs from outside their ecosystem / 'priced gated wall'. Also if they want to collect a little 'slice' of the action they need to actually offer something. Rumours I hear from tinternet, is Windows 10 is ushering people towards the later.

They better clear this up quick before the internet gets any more frenzied. Say what you will about origin or steam, but games on those platforms come with executables. If sweeney is right, the UWP probably isn't going anywhere outside of a few exclusive deals to make it look pretty.
