Microsoft's chief financial officer believes that the company is still on track to sell 10 million Xbox 360s by year end.

The ten million target has been something Microsoft set from very early on in the life of the Xbox 360, and is a figure which it sees as a very important milestone for the install base of the console. Back in March, Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer said that "In every other generation, the first guy to 10 million consoles was the number one seller in the generation."

Microsoft's latest financials report that six million Xbox 360 consoles were sold worldwide as of September 30, and speaking at a recent NASDAQ conference, Microsoft's chief financial officer, Christopher Liddell, said: "We also believe we can sell 10 million Xbox 360 units by the end of the Christmas season."

There's no doubt that the first console to reach the ten million install base will be the Xbox 360, but failing to do so by the year end would be a blow to Microsoft, and would certainly give its rivals some ammunition in the console wars.

same, here
People buy consoles for the games, not the other way around and the Xbox 360 has much better games at the moment with many on the way: Halo 3, Halo wars, Mass effect, Fable 2, GTA4, etc.

I have had an Xbox 360 for just under a year and its definitely worth the money, its a hi-def games machine that does not break the bank like the PS3 does, i live in the UK and the PS3 is being advertised for £550, this comes with 3 games mind you but the games are not excatly that great, in fact they are low quality titles. The price of the PS3 is ridiculous. I dont care if the PS3 has slightly more power than the xbox 360, who really cares, its all about the games and the 360 now has an impressive line up, thats what really matters. I am not a console fan boy and have always played games on the PC, the xbox 360 appealed to me because of its hi-def graphics and reasonable price. I have never been an fan of the PS2 despite sony selling over 100 million, i think the P2S graphics are not that good and never impressed me, its for kids who want to play guitar hero etc. And frankly the current PS3 titles are pretty naf, i am not spending £550 to play naff titles, what do you think i am crazy.
