Wii to retail for £149.99 and October release

UK retailer stumps up some details on the UK release date and price of Nintendo's Wii.

Our regular snoop around retail websites has revealed a potential release date and price for the Wii. A spokesperson for the website Shopto.net has spoken to Pro-G stating that they believe the Wii will retail for £149.99 when it's released in October this year. This will be in line with prices rumoured for a few months, but the October date is marginally earlier than the November date industry insiders had expected. The information is said to come directly from Nintendo, although is subject to change before release.

That's not all. According to the spokesperson, the Xbox 360 will retail for under £200 before Christmas, although which system will fall below this key price point isn't clear. Our best guess is that it will be the Core pack, which currently retails for £210.

If true, consumers will be in for quite an ordeal this Christmas, with two next-gen systems available for under £200, and Sony's PlayStation 3 competing for the attention of those with more than £400 to spend. We'll bring you more details if we hear anything official.

before i heard anything about the Wii, i was a huge PS3 fan but my nintendo-obsessed friend told me about this system. After staying up until 4 in the morning for the E3 press conference i was obsessed with the Wii. i now check the Wii sites and all things related to Wii. i cannot wait til its out!! Damn those nintendo keeping the release details a secret til september.

I can't wait for Wii I really can't, I must have watched the video trailer for Red Steel about 100 times. With the relationship Nintendo has with Lucasarts, I'd love to see a Star Wars game for Wii where you can actually have lightsaber battles - how cool would that be?

This looks amazing and nintendo first party games are best and most playable, like mariokart, zelda, monkeyball and metroid prime etc, Better graphics are nothing without better games i.e the atari lynx r.i.p! i can't wait, ideally i'll have all 3 consoles though! cant wait for old skool snes mario kart!!!

I would not buy a Sony PS3 if it was under $200 and I was a black coloured person being forced by a white Neo Nazi woman about to rip my face off unless I did - as in the Sony PSP ad.

Both the Nintendo Wii and XBOX 360 look respectable though. Under 200 you say...
