MCV reports that, according to ELSPA/GFK Chart-Track data, Wii and DS software sales in the UK reached 40 million units during 2008.

Wii game sales were up 153 per cent to 20.1 million units, compared to 7.9 million units in 2007, with market value up 112 per cent to £481 million. The Nintendo DS came a close second, with software sales of 19.1 million units and a market value of £481 million, up from £314 million in 2008.

During its first full year on sale in the UK PlayStation 3 software sales more than doubled from 4.2 million sold in 2007 to 10.4 million in 2008, while Xbox 360 software jumped from 9.8 million units in 2007 to 14.9 million units in 2008.

PS3 saw revenue up from £156 million to £334 million, while Xbox 360 revenue increased from £320 million to £442 million.

Total unit sales for video game software in the UK for 2008 clocked in at 82.8 million, chalking up revenue of £1.905 billion.
