It's not often that Nintendo isn't able to claim a No.1 spot in the Japanese video game charts. The previously all-conquering Super Smash Bros. Brawl has been replaced at the top by Namco Bandai's Gundam Musou Special. The newly released PS2 game shifted an impressive 149,846 units compared to only 67,007 units by SSBB. Lifetime Japanese sales of SSBB now stand at 1.358 million units.

Wii Fit is at No.3 with 64,429 units, Soma Bringer on DS is new at No.4 with 50,844 units and The Xbox 360 is able to enjoy a top five game with the release of The Idolm@ster: Live for You! which sold 43,697 units.

The Wii or DS are also unable to claim the No.1 spot in the hardware chart, beaten to the top by a resurgent PSP. The Sony handheld sold 73,706 units, considerably more than the Wii's 64,535 units and the DS' 51,922 units.

The PlayStation 3 moved 13,520 units, while the Xbox 360 managed only 2,282 units despite the popularity of the new Idolm@ster title. Lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan now stand at 546,798 units, around a quarter of PS3 install base which is fast approaching 2 million - currently 1.928 million. The Wii is, however, a long way clear with 5.447 million units sold.
