Sony to increase Blu-ray storage capacity
News
New 33.4GB discs will be compatible with current players after a firmware update.
Sony and Panasonic have announced plans to increase the capacity of Blu-ray discs from 25GB to 33.4GB. Exactly how this has been achieved is explained over on Nikkei - it's something to do with a "new method of evaluating Blu-ray Disc media quality".
According to Kotaku, the higher capacity discs will be fully compatible with excising Blu-ray players, with only a firmware update required. This also means the extra storage could be used for cramming even more content onto PS3 game releases.

I'm all for it as long as the drive dosen't run slower.
The only problem is what about people who don't have internet.
Are they gonna send out update discs to customers as well?

Seems like a good idea, will make graphics better as they will not have to compress them as much (i think?)

What they should work on though is some way to increase the read speed or an option to send your PS3 away for a faster Blu-ray drive.
