Says the PS3 is a 'future-proof system' with 'ten years of value'.

Sony Computer Entertainment has taken a swipe at the competition stating the PS3's rivals will "continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones".

Edge reports on a press release in which SCEA emphasised the out-of-the-box functionality of the PS3 compared to that of an Xbox 360 Arcade and Wii. The platform holder pointed out the PS3's Blu-ray player, built-in Wi-Fi, 80GB hard drive, free online gaming and "Ten years of value with a future-proof system via firmware updates that offer new services and features".

SCEA also pointed out that bringing an Xbox 360 Arcade up to spec with an 80GB PS3 will see an Arcade owner having to lay out a total of $449 to $499 (including the cost of the console), whereas an 80GB PS3 will only set a buyer back $399.

"The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet and adds clutter to the entertainment centre," explained the SCEA statement. "And the Wii's lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution."

The statement added: "So as PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones'." [Sony's emphasis]

Is SCEA's method of comparison questionable? Starting with the 60GB Xbox 360 instead of the Arcade would provide a cheaper way of arriving at the Xbox 360 package priced by Sony and also comes bundled with a HD compatible component cable and headset, two items not included in the 80GB PS3. No Blu-ray though. Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Yeah, they need to stick MS and Sony PR in a room and let them fight it out themselves.

At least Nintendo don't usually seem to stoop so low...

Hah, this reminds me of the one Microsoft tried the other year, it's just a copy of that, really, but from the other side.

Lmao, I love the fact that they labelled the Wii's online capabilities as 'limited'. :p

My Wii is connected wirelessly to wi-fi (not sure you can connect it up with a cable even if you wanted to for some reason.) and it runs all online games( mariokart, super smash brawl.) perfectly. Why do people say its better with a cable? My connection speed varies from about 2.9mps to 3.5mps or so which is nothing special but o.k I think.

I don't actually know anyone with a ps3 but have many friends with a 360 and do enjoy the online aspect and ease of use of the system when messages invites etc appear from fellow gamers. The party voice chat and/or in game chat is quite good as even if you aren't playing the same game as your friends its still possible to chat with them.

StonyK, I had the red ring of death and had to send my xbox out and they compensated me with a month of live service.

I had (Still trying to sell it though) a 360 and upgraded recently to a PS3. Was annoyed spending £40 each year on LIVE and having a huge wire across my lounge (Not spending £50 for wireless) so upgraded to PS3. I also had Red Ring Break and had to wait a few weeks for my machine to be fixed (No compensation on my year subscription to LIVE). Just fed up with all the 360 hidden costs. PS3 IS CHEAPER.

Sony really sounds quite desperate here. I don't know anyone with an Arcade 360 - whats the point when you can pick up a 60gb Premium for £30 more which includes a headset, hdmi cable and wireless pads? And you only have to pay money if you actually want to play online, everything else is free. Personally I would rather pay £40 a year and have a service that works than pay nothing for one that dosn't most of the time. Most people, well, infact every person I know dosn't care about Blu Ray(including muself and my friend who both own 60gb Ps3's and hdtv's and havn't got single a Blu Ray movie between us). At the end of the day Sony your machine is way overpriced and you know it. Trying to justify that by attempting to smear the competition is a low and desperate act indeed. Why not do something about it and lower the price and bring out some decent exclusives which will make more people buy the machine, gerate more income and give you the chance to show us what you really can do?

I think you have nailed that one Karlius. If this Arcade 360 owner wanted all the extras then he/she wouldn't have bought an Arcade version in the first place.

Sony can keep banging on about the 10 year life span but it's sales right now that count, especially in the current financial climate.

What about those people that don't want wireless or HDD? I don't use wireless I think it's useless for gaming and much prefer a hard wire into the router. Others may have no option but to get wireless and the external arial on the 360 adapter means a good signal. But still not as good as an ethernet cable. So there we have it options.

In UK if you pick up an arcade console for £100 (Less in Zavi as of Friday)
Standalone Blu Ray Player same standard as PS3 (Bush Argos £96)
Pick up a wirelss adapter and 60gb upgrade pack from game (£95)
Your still shy of the RRP £299 for a PS3 by £9 so all that is utter rubbish
