Sony Computer Entertainment America has responded to the October 2008 video game sales figures for the US, as compiled by NPD Group.

190,000 units of the PS3 were sold to consumers during October, a figure SCEA notes is an increase of 56 per cent compared to October 2007. According to Sony this year-on-year increase in sales can be attributed to "an unmatched line-up of first-party and third-party titles". Speaking of which, Sony noted that 2.3 million PS3 software units were sold during October, representing a 200 per cent year-over-year increase.

Regarding the PSP, Sony noted that sales of 193,000 units represented a year-to-date growth of 9 per cent. Sony also stated that the PS2 sold a further 136,000 units and 1.7 million software units. The console's installed base is now over 43 million units in the US.

It's good to see the console doing well, and nice to see a story that isn't 'this console sold more than this console'.

Surely the most important thing is that all the consoles are doing well, enhancing competition and encouraging business from software and hardware developers.

This is like giving an award to the retarted kid in the class for the "most improved student." When you have sh*t for brains, its not very difficult to make vast leaps forward. But at the end of the day, Sony is still riding the short bus.
