After a series of angry forum posts which blamed the new firmware 2.40 for bricking their shiny PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment has taken action and temporarily taken the offending update offline.

In a statement issued via the official PlayStation Blog, Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications & social media, said: "As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update."

For the time being PS3 gamers that haven't already successfully updated their consoles will have to continue playing games without Trophy support and the ability to access the XMB in-game. This is certainly not what SCE would have had in mind when it was planning for the 2.40 roll-out.

PS3 gamers affected by the problem will be wondering what exactly the platform holder is doing to rectify the situation. According to Seybold SCE is "working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up".

I think your lying! If your warranty has expired you should not expect a new machine. There is a possible fix, howerver you loose all data on your HDD. Just reformat your HDD using a pc. If any one is sensible enough they would back up there HDD every week.

Firmware update 2.40 has “bricked” my unit, an early 60GB model. Sony sent a replacement machine to me within 24 hours - which is faulty. The disc drive does not work. Sony have confirmed that the replacement machine was not new, but "remanufactured" from faulty machines originally regarded as unfit for sale. They have offered to send a further replacement, inferring generosity as my original machine was no longer under warranty! I have now requested a new, boxed, standard "40GB" model with additional compensation for its lower specification and price, and the inconvenience I have suffered. Sony are resisting this and so far a promised call from a supervisor to discuss the position has not materialised. I believe that Sony are trying to "cover up" this monumental firmware release error, and seeking to "fob off" affected customers with inferior machines - which arrive unboxed with no accessories, paperwork or guarantee.

Ok firstly what do expect from Sony, if we dont pay for online then the PSN is being payed out of there pocket. As for you Karlius your just a MS fanboy who never has anything consrtuctive to say. Yes were pissed the firmware has been taken off, but if you read the comments here, most are wrking.

Seem certain machines are effected, may be due to the owners files on board the HDD, but you guys will always diss PS3 becuase your 360 fanboys and on this site its too be expected due to the people running the site.

For me i dont know why the 360 has so many fans as it does, its not as exciting as most say it is and its hardly next gen compared to a high end pc.

Personally mine updated fine but I think as PS3 owners we've got to accept the software side of the console will never be as good as Xbox's, microsoft have so much experience in that field and a massive amount of staff to support it. Sony don't do that, nor will they- they are a hardware company first and foremost and n e one that knows about PS3 knows it was a launch vehicle not for games but for blu-ray and the cell architecture base which is now used in many other products(though usually a slimmed down 4 core version). Console yourselves with the fact our service is free i guess, if that helps...

Anyone else seeing where Sony is trying to take PSN? Xbox Live? 9I wonder if they will soon start a yearly subscription charge to pay for the infrastructire needed to provide a solid network gaming platform. Hmmm.
