Doesn't feel the PlayStation service is having to play catch-up with Xbox LIVE.

Speaking to IndustryGamers, director of PlayStation Network operations Eric Lempel has said it's no longer the case that PSN is having to catch up with Xbox LIVE.

"... at this stage of the game when I really look at PSN and the entire offering I think we're in great shape. I don't think there's a lot of “catch up” [with XBL] anymore. In some cases, I think we've got more, and we've got some other things they don't have," said Lempel.

Lempel pointed to PSN being free, PlayStation Home and the ability to purchase movies from its video download service.

"I think there's a lot we're doing that in some cases they're not doing, and I don't see a lot of things they're doing that we're not," Lempel concluded.

Updates, downloads all seem to go well for me.

PSN is free, XBL you pay. XBL, you will get the better support. Such as; XBLA, content and general work. PSN Europe especially gets neglected but then out of the blue gets some good content. Still I cannot moan if we don't get the demos or whatever else in US or Japan get before us. The amount content there is on a free online service is great.

Home... Quited like it at the start. Soon it got very boring and shallow. Maybe I would like it more as of the spaces, but in my view its a waste of time of making a 3D virtual chat sims kind of spin off. While they can easily pay more attention on improving and adding more to the PSN experience.

If that is what Sony is in implying. Then they should be doing that and improving the PSN all together. To get people such as Lee and other people to actually want to come on the PSN more often. If Sony can accomplish this, then the PSN will be far better than it is today.

My only problem with the PSN are the downloads speeds.

I am on a 50MB conection and 500MB demo takes and hour (I can get a 1GB demo on XBL in under 10 minutes)
Game updates can take up to 15 minutes (they come down in seconds on XBL)

And my ps3 is the only thing conected and wired when i download from PSN as it does speed things up a little but not much.

As for content I am happy with it.

the reason why psn doesnt need to catch up is because that sony are giving online play for free, free social networking, free music (vidzone) sony arent just a hardcore gaming console its a media hub i think that sony are trying to expand the psn to more areas of sony's electronics so its more accessible and people become more custom to it. and of course sony are having to make 3rd party companies pay more due to the fact that psn is free. i guarantee MS would do the same if it was a free service for XBL.

Some of you, or your friends in some cases, must be *****out of luck with your PS3s and online.

Went home and downloaded a lot of stuff yesterday, including the PJ Eden soundtrack and it took no time at all, even at 6pm when it tends to slow down a bit.

I really don't have any problems with the PS3. I just have problems with incomplete information. You will see me tell it like it is for all consoles. The simple fact is that because of information in this thread, I logged into HOME last night. I found the inFAMOUS space, and really enjoyed the Reaper Shock game. I have a few PSN games, although most of the PS1 games released are ones I still own. I have no actual complaints with PSN at all. I love it. But XBox Live is better.

Let's take Rainbow Six Vegas as an example. On the 360, both my girlfriend and I could hunt terrorists together on our respective Live accounts, and thus unlock any achievments together. On the PS3, only one of us can log in at any one time, with player 2 being a 'Guest'. On the 360, I could search a list of Live games and choose the one I want to go to, even if this game is already in progress. On the PS3, it chooses for me, placing me in a random lobby. Small things like that, which are the way they are because the 360 was built around Live from the start.

And I have done the update for online twice for Resistance, once on my PS3, once on my nephews. It took a DEPLORABLY long time in both instances.
