Believes the 'overall value of the box certainly trumps' a price cut.

Speaking to GameDaily, John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, has insisted that the value offered by the PS3 justifies the console's high price tag and labelled the system a "premium product".

"We're monitoring all aspects of the business and we believe the overall value of the box certainly trumps any other move at this point," said Koller.

He added: "I can say when we look at all of our platforms, we have to look at them as a business, but we also look at them in terms of where that consumer demand curve is, which is very important. I think a lot of people just say, "drop price, drop price" ... but we need to run this as a responsible business."

"... we also do believe in the overall value of the box and the perceived value that's inherent in the PS3 as a premium product is important," added Koller. "So we're doing our best to message that."

Does the PS3 offer good value? Should it be seen as a premium product? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I have a shoebox.. It is absolutely awesome. It can store shoes, just like the shoebox you have at home. However, mine can do so much more. First, I have cut tiny little air-holes in it, so that you could temporarily use it to hold an animal. Then, I taped a carrying handle to the top of it, so you can move it about one-handed. And finally, I have replaced one side with a see-through panel, so that you can keep your eye on what is inside it. I am selling this shoebox for £20.

You could go out today and get your own shoebox for a lot less than mine costs. But, would yours be as good as my premium one? This is three boxes in one here! "The value justifies the price tag."

The no games argument certainly can't stand up any more - I do believe that 2009 will be a very good year for Sony - and I can understand them standing their ground on the price this year with great games such as GOW3, Uncharted, Infamous, etc coming out - hopefully KZ2's great start to the year will continue. The exclusives are a little scarcer this year for the 360 so it will certainly give Sony a good chance to play catch up on titles.
From the point of view of buying games - I am actually quite glad that the 360 exclusives are a bit lesser this year as there seems to be a lot of top quality multi platform games to look forward too - so good times all round for 360 and PS3 owners.

It certainly is a premium product but it needs a price cut to compete, especially with the current economy.

If they lower the price what will you all moan about then?
"It has no games" is long gone and by the end of 2009 will have surpassed the 360's catalogue in my opinion. Mainly due to nothing bar an expansion pack and some DLC comin out on the 360.

It's worth £300, I agree with the man on that front. It isn't selling as well as they expected but it's shifted some 20m in 2 and a bit years so it isn't as bad as some make out to be.

289 quid isnt bad at all for the console, just add some stuff we all want, which is being able to listen to our own music withing a game, and maybe avi file support. I do think Sony should bring back backwards compatibility for ps2 games, i think they were very wrong move to remove it. Other than that im quite happy :)

yea it does offer good value, the PS3 is a very powerful machine and Sony know this and Sony should be doing something quickly to halt the competition instead of releasing something like Xi which is really fun but has a life span. You know Sony if one man can create the XMB for both the PSP and PS3 then surely you can get together and create in game music which is better than Microsofts.
