Sony mock European gamers

PlayStation 3 advertising boards seen at UEFA Champions League matches.

European gamers have finally come to terms with the fact that the PlayStation 3 won't be released in Europe until March 2007, but Sony won't let it lie. Advertising boards featuring the PlayStation 3 logo have been placed around grounds hosting Champions League matches this evening, including big matches for Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona.

Given the Champions League is the most prestigious European Club football tournament, the advertising will seem like a stab in the heart to all European gamers. Whether this is part of an extended awareness campaign from Sony, or simply a remnant of a planned launch campaign isn't known.

If the latter is true it goes to show just how late in the day the decision to delay the launch was made.

Not early at all - its brand awareness and, as its correctly posted above, the tournament doesnt finish until may.

Yeah, but the PS3 isn't out until March in Europe. It's a tad early to be advertising.

To be fair... the Champions League Final isn't until the end of May (the 23rd). So, the advertising could tie in quite nicely with the PS3 launch, which should be due around the same time.

I was surprised by the PlayStation3 ads around the fields while watching Liverpool-PSV. My first reaction was, that is a slap in the face to many. My second reaction was, have I seen a single advertisement for PlayStation3 in the US? Even if they were somehow trying to target the launch territories, it was 2 in the afternoon on the East Coast and it was soccer. Just as many people would notice those signs while watching in the US as would a Saturday evening MLS match.
