Sony has taken PS3’s 4.45 firmware update offline while it investigates the reasons why it’s causing some users’ consoles to brick.

Users started to report problems with the firmware overnight, stating that their PS3s had failed to boot after installing the update.

In a statement provided to VideoGamer.com, a SCEE representative said that the firm was “aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems.

“We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible.”

Sony says that it “apologises for the inconvenience”.

It isn’t yet known whether those affected will be able to restore their console.
