Believes in the platform going forward.

Sony Computer Entertainment America director of hardware and marketing John Koller has revealed that the platform holder intends a 10-year lifespan for the PSP.

Speaking to Joystiq, Koller said: "There is absolutely a 10-year life cycle for PSP, and probably more. We've talked about 'We'll be in the PSP business as long as we're in the PlayStation business', because we absolutely believe in handheld."

He added: "Now in terms of where we are in the current life cycle, I think we're just kind of hitting our stride. We just announced that we hit 60 million units worldwide, which is a very, very good number for PSP, we've got a lot of good development support."

Koller also said that Sony continues to invest in PSP, citing this as evidence it has no plans to drop the platform.

"It's just a very healthy platform," he said. "I don't think we'd be investment spending to the tune that we are without full belief that this is a go-forward platform."

It was fairly strongly rumoured that a PSP2 would be revealed at E3 last week, but no such announcement came.

They would certainly get 10 years from it if they suddenly released a manditory update which bricked any psp's using CFW and homebrew stuff. Then patch up all the holes so no more hacking can take place. That might just boost it's chances. At the moment it seems like it's an original xbox(psp) being sold up against the ps3(3DS) and 360(iPhone). Just doesn't make sense!

Obviously 10 is their lucky number!

While I can see the PS3 living up to this, the PSP really needs a successor. With the iPhone and DS platforms forging ahead in terms of gaming the PSP is being left behind. It's a good platform still, don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic games for it, but it needs more these days.
