A Japanese retailer has slashed a whopping 20 per cent from the price of the 3G equipped PlayStation Vita in Japan, according to reports.

The price cut follows a so-so launch week in Japan which saw PS Vita achieve 321,000 unit sales and a poor second week of only 72,479 units – a staggering 400,000 units behind what the 3DS sold in the same week. The 3G PS Vita model is said to have been a very poor seller.

Retailer advertising shows the 3G model priced at ¥24,999, down from the launch price of ¥29,980. This makes the 3G model only ¥19 more expensive than the Wi-Fi version’s ¥24,980 price tag.

The lacklustre PS Vita launch in Japan has cast widespread concern over the long-term success of the handheld at its current price point. Nintendo 3DS sold 370,000 units in its debut week and followed with 210,000 the week after, but Nintendo ended up slashing the price of its handheld only six months later – a move which appears to have paid dividends. Sony looks likely to face a similar pricing decision in the coming months.
