ps3 final hardware 1 -

Speaking to The Guardian, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has revealed that reducing the price of the PS3 would have potentially led to Sony exiting the video game business.

"My objective is financial - to make a profit in our territory by the end of March, and we will. Our priority has always been the PS3; the forecast was 10m at the beginning of the year and it's still 10m," said Reeves. "If we'd cut the price, lost another billion dollars, we might have had a huge Christmas but it would have been followed by a huge loss. The company could have thought: 'Hmm, I'm not sure I want to be in this business at all.' But we've shown Sony this is still a good business to have."

Reeves admits that Sony isn't in for an easy ride.

"We simply have to suffer a little," he explained, "go down in market share and mind-share. It's like Ali v Foreman - go eight or nine rounds and let him punch himself out. We're still standing, we're still profitable and there's a lot of fight in us. I don't say we will land a knockout blow, but we're there and we're fighting."

Regarding job cuts, Reeves confirmed that there are no such plans for the European operation.

"We took our cuts in 07 and 08, we restructured and streamlined and we're as lean, as mean as we can be," said Reeves. "I have seen no plans to cut jobs and it wouldn't be productive to do so. We're always looking at ways to reduce costs, replacing the current 65 nanometre Cell chip with a 45 nanometre one probably in middle of year. But will it be anything as off-strategy as releasing a PS3 with a DVD rather than a Blu-ray drive? I doubt it."

MY BAD!!!!!!
lmao.. i'm in class so im rushing this. another way you could look at it is...
selling 4 million at 300.. for 1.2B - cost which is 400*4M= 1.6B so its actually a loss of 400M ....

Man you can't even edit your comments!
my bad.

Trigger...
If Sony sells 2 Million PS3 at $400 that is = $800M - (cost) say they break even right now so its
$800M - $800M = $0 profit..
If they sell 4 Million PS3 at $300 that is = $1.2B - (cost) since 400 was break even you'll be giving away 100.... so it will be 100 on 4 Million = 400M....
$1.2B-$400M = $800M - the cost to make(300)
$800M - $800M = $0 Profit

EITHER way you go.. its the same thing...so why risk cutting the price assuming that it will be 4 Million sold and just wait till you can afford to cut the price.. in times like this.. you need to play it safe

yeah but doesnt this kinda a kick in the groin for those people who are waiting for a price cut to buy the system. How long will it be then until there is a decent price cut ?

He does have a point from a financial standing, but then you have to balance it - do you want to sell 2 million machines at $400 each or 4 million at $300? Also not forgetting the increased sales in other hardware (controllers, headsets, etc), first party releases and gaining a bigger market share with both the videogame consumers at large and third party publishers.

Obviously many minds far cleverer than mine have already been through all this for Sony, but surely at the end of the day the most important factor for a long-term business plan is to get as many sales as possible and you'll reap the benefits of that over the following years.
