Unnamed VG247 sources have claimed that Sony will announce the PSP2 on January 27 at a "business overview and strategy meeting" in Tokyo.

According to the report only "very select press" will be in attendance.

VG247 also calls the "business overview and strategy meeting" a showcase, suggesting we'll hear and see quite a lot about the handheld and its games.

MCV is also backing the January 27 reveal and is promising lots more info - some of which will be a "huge surprise" - on the new platform in this week's edition of MCV. Expect that on Thursday morning.

Sony has declined to comment. Analysis

A late January announcement would give Sony the opportunity to one-up Nintendo's late February launch of the 3DS in Japan. This would depend on the hardware and its line-up impressing, however.

Looking forward to see what the PSP has to offer. The original was fun but the game choice was the poorest except the GTA games. And that damn lcd screen always getting those little dots and the fact of how many different versions of the psp it got annoying. I hope the latest version proves to be the only version.

Hm, well it could be a combination of speculations, i.e. two thumb sticks and 3d and hd? Is that possible with todays technology? To have hd 3d on a handheld?

Perhaps. There is talk of a "huge surprise" and 3D could be it. Not sure that would be such a huge surprise though. Infact, unless it is free I'm going to say the surprise isn't going to be all that huge.

Maybe it has 3d capabilities? Hmm that would be interesting indeed.

I'm interested to see what Sony have in store for the PSP but I can't see this generating the same sort of excitement as the 3DS. The high price and battery life seems to have dampened things a touch for the 3DS but I still can't see the PSP 2 bettering either of those.

I think it can only do well if it has 2 analogue sticks. That would be it's defining feature(and of course good games, better online,ps3 intergration, trophies tied to PSN ID and a range of game pricing).

I hope they do and i also hope they have a solid line up for the release. That's what is key to booming sales right?
