The major 1.6 update introduces GPS navigation similar to Google maps.

vitaangle605 -

PlayStation Vita will have a major software update on February 8, with version 1.6 introducing two new features.

The Home screen will now host a Map app, enabling GPS-powered navigation, offering walking and driving directions plus the option to display satellite imagery.

The Vita's photo app will also be updated to enable video recording.

And fans of flashing lights will be amazed to hear that the Home button will now glow blue when the handheld is connected to a power source.

The update also brings about the change from PSN to SEN.

PS Vita launches in the UK on February 22 - Amazon currently has the best pre-order deal, which includes a free 8GB memory card and the option to buy a launch game for £15.

Firmware and software updates are fine. The difference between PlayStation updates and other devices is that I can go and make a cup of Tea and it still won't be done. I don't get that with Xbox Live, not even when they roll out an entirely new dashboard every two years.

Updates are necessary, but the invariably inorganic structure of Sony software means updating PSN is one of the most tiresome experiences for gamers.

Also PS3 haz no gaems so it updates whenever I turn it on ;)

Haha, that's most devices, isn't it? :P

I'm not trying to defend Sony, fanboy style. I just don't have as much of a problem with firmware updates as most people. I see firmware/software updates appearing on nearly every piece of internet connected technology I own. The most frequent probably being iTunes. Yeah, most of them are background updates, or 'update when you're ready' updates. And perhaps Sony do things a bit too aggressively. But, its gonna happen so get on with it. *shrugs*

It's just something that happens. It's been happening for years and I'm surprised that people are still complaining about it (not directed at pblive).

It's not a good thing if they have the same firmware update rules as used for the PSP Go. It doesn't matter if the unit is plugged in, it won't update until the battery reaches a certain level. That would be a pain for new Vita owners who connect up right away.

Or is that the 3DS I'm thinking of? Perhaps it is both. Or perhaps I just made it all up.

It's a good thing isn't it? I take this as a sign that Sony are right on top of things and already looking to improve the system with fixes and software upgrades.

Start as you mean to go on: An update which comes out before the physical product has even hit UK shelves. Great.
