Sony's PlayStation Vita has finally dragged itself past the one million sales milestone in Japan after 42 weeks on sale, data from Media Create (via NeoGAF) has revealed.

To highlight just how slow a start the Vita has endured, Nintendo 3DS took just 13 weeks to pass one million and PSP took 14 weeks.

In the week beginning October 1 3DS sold 63,669 units, compared to only 7,957 PS Vita units. Even the PSP continues to outsell Vita, moving 17,769 units.

So that's why you bought one, because it was a stupid idea ;)

Stupid idea or not, I'm very pleased with mine and the battery is certainly better than the 3DS, I was forever charging that.

Could just sell games with ads on them like a lot of app games do.

The Vita was a stupid idea anyway, soon as I heared they were bringing out another portable it was gonna fail. Esspecially at 200 odd quid with hardly any battery life.

Thats true, when i walk in a videogame store i hardly notice the vita collection and i bloody own one. It needs more of a presence and the games available will play a big role if it ever gains momentum, at the moment there simply is not nearly enough choice in retail stores to draw people in.

When the PSP got hacked it sold loads but publishers turned away because of all the piracy. No, what the Vita needs is:

a) More AAA games
b) Better advertising
