The sales figures for the PlayStation 4 far exceed any previous Sony games console, according to PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan.

Sony announced earlier this week that the PS4 had sold 10 million units to consumers since launching back in November, with Ryan later telling CVG that the figure is bigger than even he expected.

"I think if you'd offered me that at the start of November I'd have bitten your hand off," he said. "If you'd have told me that I'd be standing up on the stage at Gamescom giving that number I'd have been very surprised.

"Particularly given that we'd had some pretty severe stock shortages... less so in the UK - although certainly before Christmas in the UK, but in continental Europe it's been quite difficult through the first few months of this year, so it would have been faster if we'd had sufficient supply."

Ryan is then asked how these numbers stack up to previous PlayStation hardware.

"Oh, way, way out in front. Way out in front. It's significantly ahead of anything we've done on any other PlayStation platform. I wouldn't be able to rank it against competitor platforms, though I'd imagine we'd show up pretty well in that too, but certainly way ahead of anything we've done before.”

Sony is showing no signs of slowing down with the PS4, announcing firmware 2.0 during the conference which introduces the SharePlay functionality.

I don't care who is on the console war, that is...

If console A or B are beating the other then it's good for the industry if the other side are pushed into providing gamers with more to help push their own console sales further. Competition is good.

...Okay. I'm not really sure what that's supposed to mean, whether you're just bored or whether I should be pleased!

With all of Sony's success I think there is no way that they can slow down now. On a comment on one of IGN's articles someone thanked Sony for creating the behemoth that the Xbox One has, at least comparatively to how they were pre-Christmas, become. Sony being out in front has caused MS to step up their game and with firmware updates and an increased focus on games - albeit too much on Halo - I think they have.

This, of course, is good because Sony won't now get complacent being in first place and means that they cannot slow down this momentum either. Sony needs to keep coming fast and hard to keep on top and I think that this will make the quality of software (both games and firmware) much higher than they have been in previous generations. PlayShare is one of the most interesting things that I have heard about in a while and whilst some might cry hypocrisy due to the backlash when MS announced this functionality (not that I personally remember it being announced) it's a great option nonetheless. The improved hardware means that the firmware itself can do much more and I think that that is where the focus will lie with this generation - the ease of socialability when gaming; whether as simple as cross-game chat, or as much as Playshare.
