Sony has announced that online play on PS4 will require a PlayStation Plus membership, which can be carried forward from PS3.

The news came shortly after Sony revealed there will be no DRM restrictions on used PS4 games – obviously choosing its moment to slip in the less than great news that online play will no longer be free.

Sony's promising one free PS4 title every month, with Don't Starve, Outlast and Secret Ponchos all coming to PS Plus on PS4.

New stuff to check out

With the £80 price difference between this and the XB1 you could buy 2 years PSplus!
If PSplus over the last year is anything to go by get roughly 100 games as part of the price :0)

Cheaper than Live? Did Sony announce that you only need one PS+ subscription per console to play online? Or is it a one sub per person? Because that's exactly what MS announced. One Live sub per console. If you live on your own, or are the only user of your console, then sure, potentially cheaper. As soon as a single additional person uses the console online: Live is cheaper. I guess everyone glossed over this while they were busy focusing on the negative.

Anyway the value of the goods is irrelevant for me. I cant afford to subscribe to either. I could have happily moved back to Sony while it was free to play online but I just dont have the spare money to pay to play online.

Note that I'm not quibbling at the price, £30-£40 for consistent online environments is value to me, was just trying to shop around for the best deal :)

Remember you can buy buy a PS+ subscription with normal credit and there are sites (like CD keys.com) where you can get £35 worth of credit for £29. I've used them and they're really good.

Not payed for Xbox live gold for nearly a year now mainly cos I don't really play online anyway and since inside Xbox was closed I had no reason to pay for it it had lost its soul but getting a free game or multiple free games for paying ps+ ill buy it today only reason I haven't on ps3 is my hard drive is tiny and full of game installs so can't download anything.

Sony promo sales. I'm on my 2nd year of PS Plus and never paid more than £29.99.

I can get XBox Live for a year for £29.99, where can I get a PS+ subscription that's cheaper?

Worth pointing out that this is still cheaper than the current Xbox Gold membership.
And I wouldn't be surprised if the XBL price goes up in order to support all those new features.

This isn't good news for those who live in countries that SONY doesn't support.

I don't think that this is too much of a big deal: I mean, PS+ more than justifies the £40 a year tag. I mean, this month there's Uncharted 3, XCom, LBP Karting, Demon's Souls, Kingdoms of Amalur and Ico Collection HD. I mean, Christ, I'd pay £40 for those alone!

I agree that the service will need to be improved, and the store needs totally ripping out and starting anew. But this is fine either way. I mean, considering PS+ subscriptions ere £20 earlier in the year I think that paying for online play isn't a big deal.

Sony just need to ensure that that have what MS have, but better!

I'm definitely holding on to the PS3 for a while, too much backlog to get through... but I'm going to grab a PS4 and decide not to buy any games at all. PS+ should give me enough to keep me going, as long as you don't lose them after the month, which I assume you won't as currently that doesn't happen.

DriveClub PS+ Edition? Why the need for the additional description? Hope it's the full game...

One of the major reasons I got rid of my 360 & went to PS3 was having to pay to play online.

I was all set for switching to PS4 straight away, but now I dunno.

Might just hold onto my PS3 for a while.

It's not really that bad considering Xbox One comes with just a 14-day trial of XBL and there's no telling how much XBL is going to cost when X1 comes out. It might be the same as it is now but I wouldn't trust MS not to put up the price by $1 a month or something.

Also, considering the fact that PS4 is already £80 cheaper than X1, I have about 2 years worth of PS+ savings there straight away.

PS+ was originally an extra but putting multiplayer behind a paywall is a small price to pay when we don't have to accept all the DRM and used games rubbish.

Sad about that and means they really have to improve the service, but then everyone should have PS+ now, anyway.
