The PlayStation 4 is already making a profit on a per unit basis, Sony president and CEO Kaz Hirai has revealed.

Speaking during Sony’s Corporate Strategy Meeting FY14, Hirai said: “From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses.”

Hirai was referring to the huge losses Sony endured during the early years of the PS3. It had been expected that Sony would take a loss on PS4 console sales for some time longer, having revealed back in September that a profit would only be made once the customer also bought PS Plus and some games.

In addition Hirai said that “approximately half of PS4 users are registered to the PlayStation Plus subscription service”.
