ChartTrack has confirmed that Sony sold 165,000 PlayStation 3 units over the console's weekend launch - a new home console UK record.

Despite much ridicule over lack of queues and even discounted hardware and software, the PlayStation 3 has gotten off to a record setting start here in the UK. The console behemoth sold an impressive 165,000 units over its launch weekend, and with 220,000 units available from day one there has been no stock shortages.

Sony isn't new to such success in the UK and currently holds the launch sales record with the PSP; the handheld shifted 185,000 units over its launch weekend in September 2005.

The PlayStation 3 couldn't quite topple its handheld cousin, but it was more than able to outsell its rivals' launches: the Wii managed 105,000 units back in December 2006 while the Xbox 360 only managed a paltry 70,000 when it launched in December 2005. It's worth noting that both the Wii and Xbox 360 launches were hampered quite severely by stock shortages, but this takes nothing away from the PlayStation 3's impressive launch numbers.

It remains to be seen whether Sony can maintain sales of the PlayStation 3 in the months ahead as it looks to catch Both Microsoft and Nintendo in the home console race.

I have played on all 3 of the next gen consoles and although i'd have to say that the PS3 is the best there is no way that it warrants £425. £325 maybe.

I don't think as many as the Wii or 360 POP if both had the neverending supply of stock! Simply because of the P$3 price!

I wonder how many Sony could have sold if it had a pre Christmas release like the XBox and Wii!

I really do wonder what would of happened if the wii stock had been higher, the wii would have sold double if there were enough to go around. ;)

Its a case that if there was more Wii and 360 the records would have been smashed this means nothing! There is no hype for the P$3 and expect a massive price drop innimently! You couldn't get a 360 till April after its November Launch and the Wii is pretty much doing the same! Every console that comes in goes straight out the doOR! A big factor to consider is the Idiots that bought a P$3 that thought they could sell it on for a profit on Ebay sadly mistaken! These people are in high numbers do a search on ebay you'll find Thousands! Its a joke!

Considering what you are getting, the price is good, I agree the price should have been a bit lower (Unfortunately I don't set the prices) But if you add all the extra's that people have bought for the 360, then the prices actually are near enough the same.

So PS3 Wins ..

I personally find it harder to believe the vast number of microsoft lovers that are posting on news sites all over the web today whining that they don't believe these figures....
Yesterday the launch was a failure becuase the qeues were small, and it was gloat all the way.
I think the lesson is that most people were content to get it delivered from an online supplier rather than lug the beast home from HMV or Virgin...
I can see now why most market analysts agree the PS3 will still come out on top of the next gen race.

Why can't this be right Aleitheo, just because the PS3 has not sold out everywhere, does not mean that it has not been selling, use your brain (If you have one) Sony has flooded the market with PS3's, so that willing customers can actually go into any shop and buy one without hassel, not like the Wii and 360, where their launch days were poor, giving limited supplies to shop owners and making the customers wait weeks on end to get their hands on a glorified Game Cube or a Faulty 360. Next time you post, do some positive thinking before you type, you might understand that this is actually true.

So say I

This can't be right, where I am the Wii couldn't be found anywhere a few weeks before and after the launch. With the PS3 however I could pick up one of the 14 PS3s left at the end of the launch day if I wanted, even after the launch it was the same.
