PS3 graphics for mobile devices in just three years
NewsPosted 11/03/2010 - 1:42pm GMT
Multiprocessors to make it possible.
According to Imagination Technologies, the company behind the PowerVR chip that powers many smartphones including the iPhone, three years from now mobile devices will be able to offer graphics comparable to the PS3.
We're not talking low resolution visuals either, but proper 720p images viewed either on native displays or on a TV output via HDMI.
The big change from what's available now to the expected PS3 equalling graphics three years from now will be the introduction of multiprocessors - Imagination Technologies expects to be able to get three or four processors into a phone without pushing power demands through the roof.

In that case I really, really hope that it does happen!

Maybe they were easy to copy or something, no idea tbh.
But Yeah SD cards would be the best option to stop that.
I'm still annoyed at myself that I bought one or two UMD films, what a dick move by me lol.

I think the main things to worry about are price and how long will the battery last for it.
I also think for a handheld device that the games should be easy to pick up and play like on the DS.
I felt it was too much to have a condensed PS1/PS2 games that require over ten hours for a handheld console.
Most people will be playing on this on a train/plane etc
I think thats why the DS has done so well compared to the PSP.

In short. This will be possible. True the graphics won't be quite as polished but it will be a good representation. How can I be so sure well it's simple, there are numerous laws of physics and processors that could be applied to prove the theory but I'd rather use a real-life scenario.
The PS2 was released in 2000 and 4 years later we got the PSP. While the PSP isn't quite as good as PS2 it's almost there graphically obviously at a reduced resolution. So there's proof that the processor can shrink.
What are the advantages now? Well the PS2 slim was released in 2004-2005 so the shrunken processor/components were in development throughout the development of the PSP.
When this article was written we already have the PS3 slim meaning areas have already begun to be shrunk and streamlined.
I imagine a new Sony hand held (I say Sony as they are a company that have since the introduction to the market made huge leaps at pushing the graphical capabilities of a generation - PS2 excused for early release) with similar graphics to the PS3 by the year 2012 a whole year less than this article suggests.
It could be announced as early as E3.

Granted the timescale is a bit rich but its not as far out as some people think. The nokian97 can already do video out to a tv that doesnt look too shabby and budget laptops and pcs with ion platorm chipsets dont run much more and they already eat dedicated hdmi output for breakfast.
