Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that PS3 Firmware v3.00 is now available for all PS3 consoles. The update comes on the same day as the launch of the new 120GB slimmer PS3.

v3.00 introduces a number of features, including “What’s New,” a redesigned status indicator and Friends List, and support for new avatars and dynamic themes. PS3 users living in the UK will also find that they can now access the BBC iPlayer directly from the XMB.

Apparantly so. But you need a bracket. My anxiety was that it could not be placed on the narrow end but after seeing a display model it looks like you can? Once it's up I'll try post a pick. Got to get a 32" TV for the bedroom also lol. But I reckon i'll pick one up for £300 around christmas.

With regards to claiming off these companies when original Xbox customers bought their consoles day one and within a few months saw the console price slashed they were offered a free controller and two free games. I think its a similar circumstance as such. Fire them an email Tom see what they say you have nothing to lose.

yea the bbc iplayer via the ps3's browser works really well, to the point that i will probably start using almost everyday or whenever i have missed a programme.

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated.

IP filtering is being done already, the BBC insist on it, it does seem like the model number issue is unintentional.

As El-Dev says, you can still watch iPlayer through the web browser, using the same version of iPlayer (a big screen link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen/)

Nah, wouldn't be a strong enough argument. The main purpose is playing games, which it does. Unfortunately you'd be wasting time by arguing that it doesn't have iPlayer as most people have other methods of getting it anyways, eg in the PS3 browser. Also, the iPlayer wasn't a feature when the product was launched.

When they stopped manufacturing the 60gb models and couldn't replace the 60gb with 60gb models they gave vouchers from the retailer for the equivalent value of replacement, 80gb which didn't have BC and hasn't been an issue so far.

Thats an awfully long list PB so I see your point. I would have thought IP filtering would have been the logical step but if Tom is in detrement to other users and it is to Sony's doing there needs to be either a timescale for completion or compensation package worked out. As gauranteed this problem will continue to arise especially when the UK video store is launched.

Technically there is no difference between the 04 and 03 models in hardware or software. The firmware would need to specifically look at the model number to prevent it being shown.

But this isn't logical, as they already use the IP address to limit non UK users anyway and region coding is exactly the same for UK and western Europe. From my chat with Sony it seems that it's an unforseen side effect of the new firmware and not deliberate at all. They're getting it fixed and a patched firmware update will be available at some point.

As for whether the firmware was a major update, yes, it was. It adds many things including:

New logo, intro music and background design.

New design for the XMB (XrossMediaBar) screen to make using it a lot easier. New Clock and 'working' icon with current avatar. News bar moved to an icon showing new content which also has links to the content directly.

Quick indication of number of friends online.

Links to the last 3 games you played with quick launch option for each game.

A new 'TV' option is available (with some PS3s currently not showing this but soon to be rectified according to Sony) which houses both PlayTV and iPlayer (UK only). Possibly due to have a link to the Movie and TV channel in November.

Under the Game and Video icons you can link to the relevant parts of the PSN store.

Folders sizes have been increased and folder browsing is now easier with number of folders displayed.

Text copying and pasting is available to make folder and file creation easier.

An option for Multi-Output setting has been added as an option under Sound.

A new option for HDD Content Audio Language and HDD Content Subtitle Language have been added as options under Video Settings.

You are now able to use the right stick of the wireless controller to perform fast forward or fast reverse operations during video content playback.

A new Print This Screen and Save Screenshot has been added as an option in the browse mode menu of the Internet browser.

The friends list has been changed to make it easier to see the list with any background and the list of messages from a specific friend are listed under their name.

"Fit for purpose covers not only the obvious purpose of an item but also any purpose queried by the customer and given assurances about by the trader."

When you buy a UK model you expect it to do all the things a UK model should do. If then your item is replaced with a model that is not offering the same functionality it is no longer fit for purpose. When Ninjutsu's console was replaced it should have been like for like and therefore he is entitled to replacement.

Also under the sales of goods act.

Maybe replacement is a big ask but if you kick up enough stink Tom i'm sure they'll give you something.

" I said would be asking for a UK model from Sony under the trade descriptions act."

Replacing a PAL 60gb model with another PAL 60gb model is more than adequate, what part of the trade descriptions act would you be quoting to get a UK model?

No if it's true I appologise and like I said would be asking for a UK model from Sony under the trade descriptions act. Thats mad. I give a big appology and send you kisses and hugs Tom!!!

Are breakdowns seriously that frequant then? 4 times broken down thats mad!

Looks like this update was not all it was billed to be and really much a do about nothing. Surely it didn't warrant a whole new release number for the small inclusions. 3.0 would indicate a major firmware overhaul?
