Don't worry - Sony has extensive experience in making things fit

The rumours of a downgrade began when an anonymous inside source claimed that "The current designs, despite having vents all over the place, apparently still can't dissipate the heat to sufficient levels." The source also noted that the Cell processor could have its clock speed reduced from 3.2GHz to 2.8GHz, enabling Sony to manufacture a greater number of the next-gen processors.

Today, the rumour has been called "ridiculous" by Sony spokesperson Jonathan Fargher. Speaking to Eurogamer, Fargher said: "The PS3 downgrade story is categorically not true."

"Developers have been working with PS3 dev kits for anywhere between eight and 12 months, and to suggest that we'd now take the decision to downgrade the hardware at such a late stage, is, well, ridiculous," said Fargher.

In a somewhat amusing response to the claims that Sony was unable to fit all the components of the PS3 inside its case, Fargher said: "Granted, whilst all products are not perfect, we do have over 40 years of experience making consumer electronics equipment, and therefore, extensive experience in making things fit - PSone and Slimline PS2 being just two examples of that."

There you have it - reassurance that the people at Sony are experts at making things fit.

Xbox 360 and PC games on a PS3?!? I know it's good, but it's not that ruddy good!!!!! For one you would need loads more hardware to play PC games, and also the coding for 360 games isn't recognised by the PS3. I know someone's got Windowws XP running on a PS3, but Xbox 360 and PC games??? Yeah, right!!!

I wouldn't necessarily rule this out. It's been said before that they are not producing good enough yields for the Cell processor. There is also speculation that the PS3 will end up having an external power brick. The Cells 7 SPE running @ 3.2 Ghz is going make the system extremely hot. Another thing to be said is that none of the hardware for the PS3 has been finalized. At E3 none of the demos we saw were using finalized hardware. It's June now. The PS3 has four months before it launches. How plausible is it that it willed not be delayed again or that some of the specs will come down. I think this rumor is 50/50, its chances of being true are just as good as its chances of being false. It is Sony. They have a proven track record of saying things that aren't particularly true.

what the hell!?
if they think that they can get away with spreading a rumour around like that then what is the point in making these consoles?

true if the first dev kits were only running at 2.4ghz & newer ones at 2.8Ghz- then moving the final predicted specs from 3.2Ghz to 2.8Ghz wouldnt mean a downgrade.

the ps3 was supposed to run at 3.2ghz not 2.4 it would be a downgrade.

Not necessarily,
The alpha kits were said to be only 2.4 GHz cell chips so if the beta or final kits were only 2.8 GHz it still would be an upgrade over what developers are currently using.

Another ridiculous rumour goes squish! The Inquirer isn't cranking them out fast enough. I wonder what the next rubbish-ridden evacuation of their journalistic bowels will produce?
