PS4 will be able to locally emulate PS1 and PS2 games, a source within Sony's PlayStation Now service has told Digital Foundry.

The source claims that Sony's internal emulator for PS1, PS2 and PSP games – already used on PS3 and PS Vita – will be adopted for PS4, but with the aim to emulate retro titles with crisp high definition visuals more in-line with the HD remakes seen over the last few years.

PlayStation Now will launch in the US this summer, but there's no indication of when the emulation service will roll out.

VideoGamer.com Analysis

Unlike PlayStation Now, a fast broadband connection won't be required for a one-time download emulated game, meaning the likes of Europe hopefully won't be kept waiting.

Hopefully a few more PS2 games tick over to Europe when this happens.

I'm looking at you Persona 3 FES.

Not entirely clear. Does it mean PS4 will download games from PS Store like PS3/Vita does or does it mean they will be streamed through Playstation Now?

Edit: Oh it means like the PS3/Vita. Very good news if the rumour is correct

Sony is doing alot of stuff right this generation. Glad to see a company learn from past mistakes.
