The PlayStation 3 has begun production, with the first 200,000 units expected to be delivered to Sony by the end of the month.
Taiwan's Commercial Times reports that production of the PlayStation 3 has begun, with the first batch of consoles expected to be in Sony's hands by the end of the month. The AFX news service which ran the story contacted Asustek, the firm manufacturing PS3s for Sony, for some confirmation that the console had entered into production. Unfortunately the company refused to comment.
According to the Commercial Times, Sony expects to receive four million PlayStation 3 units from Asustek in the first consignment, and production of the PS3 is also expected to begin shortly at Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd.
If the report is accurate it bodes well for launch availability. The Xbox 360 began production 69 days prior to launch, and as a result was in very short supply for several months following its launch. If production of the PlayStation 3 has already begun this means Sony has 114 days in which to manufacture consoles before the console goes on sale in Japan.
