Schafer believes the development budget of a sequel would have to match that of the first game.

decadepsycho -

The cost of developing a Psychonauts sequel will be around $13 million, according to Double Fine head Tim Schafer, but this doesn't appear to be a problem for potential partner Markus "Notch" Persson.

"I was like, 'I don't think you can make [it] for a million dollars'," Schafer told Kotaku. "The original game was, I think, $13 million, I think you have to match the original game."

Schafer added: "As soon as I mentioned the amount of money he said, 'Yeah, I can do that.'"

Schafer has also revealed his surprise at the public proposal by Notch, but says he would like to work with the Minecraft creator.

"He said he had no idea it would get picked up like this," said Schafer. "He said, 'Sorry for putting you on the spot, I didn't realise it would go so big.'

"I feel like I was being proposed to on the jumbotron at the baseball game."

He concluded: "He's been pretty successful. And, when you look into it, it's a really inspiring story. He's just a regular guy. He didn't do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it's a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I'd like to do something with him.

"And I'd like to make Psychonauts 2."

The pair working together to make Psychonauts 2 still seems a possibility, but we can't help feel we won't see a fairytale ending.

Personally I think they should release a HD version of the original to test the current generation of gamers willing to give it a go. I never completed the game, but it sure had potential. I still think there are a lot of poeple who've never even heard of Psychonauts, let alone be excited about a sequel. If it's a sequel that encouraged the players to make the 'building blocks' of the human psyche, it might encourage some of the Minecraft fans to play a game with a more surreal approach to the already odd Minecraft series.

Whether it has a fairy tale ending, or not; At least it's a nice story amongst a cut-throat industry :)
