Pachter: Wii HD would damage PS3

The launch of a more powerful Wii console by late 2010 would be bad news for Sony.

According to a new report, "Money for Nothing: How Ancillary Revenues Can Extend the Console Cycle", by Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, if Nintendo releases a HD Wii console by late 2010 it will have a significant impact on Sony's chances of clawing back market share this generation.

Dubbed the Wii Plus, the new console would feature graphics capabilities roughly on a par with the Xbox 360 and PS3.

“In our view, if Nintendo can offer such a device by year-end 2010, it will be in a position to seriously damage Sony’s chances of a comeback this cycle. We would expect publishers to support such a move, given that the cost of porting an Xbox 360 game to the new Wii Plus HD format would likely be lower than the cost of building a ground up Wii game,” Pachter said in the report.

“Of course, the timing of such a launch will depend upon several factors, including the cost of production, the price points of its competitors’ consoles, and the willingness of publishers to support a launch. We believe that each of these factors will shift in Nintendo’s favour eventually, and are targeting fall 2010 for a Wii Plus announcement,” he added.

I agree with Renegade. Nintendo do lack of making exclusive IPs, however Conduit is out and that is proving to be a good exclusive for the Wii.

If they do release it then it would take a blow against the PS3 to a certain extent. The pricing would be £200, still in an economic downturn, any games to boost the quailty? I think Nintendo should release a big hit game if they do this. Like somebody has said 'Zelda' and Metroid: Other M to come out so that is two. To look forward too.

Why thumb him down? He has a point, if Nintendo didn't concentrate on the casual market as much and made some more hardcore games (Starfox for example) the Wii would be MUCH more popular as it is.

Yacaman, if you read his post he said HARDCORE not about the games themselves.

Zelda with PS3 graphics would be the best. Mario with these graphics wow, and Metroid with better gameplay and graphics.......

Renegade your wrong. They can make great games, they have proved it time and time again. Nintendo will rule if this happens next year. You see everyone will have their version of motion control. Its only logical for them to go up in the graphics category. They already have the biggest selling console.
I hope this is true and now I will buy my first Wii. Do it Nintendo !!!!!!!!

Piffle! If Nintendo were to release 'Wii Plus' it would impact on Sony AND MS, but mostly Sony. ANY competition is a bad thing for them at the moment, as they are absolutely, categorically, and unquestionably in third place. MS seem to have done a much better job than Sony of cashing in on the non-hardcore market, which is why you saw way more ads for Lips and Rock Band over Xmas than you saw for Gears 2.

Not really, Because Nintendo dont make enough *Hardcore* IPs them selfs.

That is also my problem with Microsoft.

But why I love sony :)
