350 million games too.

xbox 3601 -

The Xbox 360 has now sold 40.2 million units worldwide, as of March 31, 2010. That's according to figures released in Microsoft's financial earnings. The Xbox 360 launched in the tail-end of 2005 and currently has a software attach rate of 8.8 games per console sold - bringing total software sales to a massive 353.8 million.

In recent months the Xbox 360 has suffered slightly, with sales down 12 per cent compared to the same period last year. Between January and the end of March 2010, the console sold 1.5 million units worldwide.

Microsoft will be hoping the introduction of its new motion-based control system, Project Natal, will boost sales of the now ageing hardware when it's released during the holiday period later this year.

That's about 10 times the population of New Zealand. Wowzers.

Well I think they had an idea some more than normal would break but the actual amount that did croak it was probably quite a suprise.

My only beef is they knew that high percentage would not work and they put them out anyway. "That is unacceptable"

Another survey says 42% which is still unacceptable for an electronics product.

Good news for MS, they probably would have liked the whole venture to be more profitable but I suppose that's the price you pay for releasing a poorly manufactured machine.

The failure rate is offset a little by the 3 year warranty I guess. Adding 2 years to the standard 1 must have cost Microsoft $millions.

That would equate to only 26.4M, had people not re-purchased new machines.

I know that with any console there is always a certain failure rate, but 66% is very high.

Nearly everyone I know has had the RROD at some point, but at least MS acknowledged it and tried to help people out with the fault.

Kotaku did a survey on this earlier this year, out of 21,285 respondents, 66% indicated that at least 1 360 had died on them.

Personally I've bought 2, the first one died 3 times, 3rd time out of warranty.

The article is based on the figures released in Microsoft's financial earnings. When Sony and Nintendo do the same then you'll see a similar article.

Wot? I'm only saying. All I'm seeing is boasting about sales
of the 360 nothing about how well the wii or ps3 or even the handhelds.
