Microsoft's decision to make a u-turn on its Xbox One DRM plans has not changed EA's decision to scrap the online pass system.

"[There is] no change to our decision to discontinue Online Pass," EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg told Polygon. "It is dead."

"As we said a few weeks ago, none of our new EA titles will include online pass, and we are removing it from existing games as well," Reseburg said. "Nothing else on today's news, but did want to be clear that our online pass decision was based on player feedback, and there's no change."

EA has already made a number of Online Passes free to download on Xbox 360 and PS3 following its decision to abandon the scheme. Analysis

Many believed the online pass system would be replaced by new anti-used game policies, but EA COO Peter Moore said during E3 that the publisher was all for used games.

It remains to be seen if publishers will make new attempts to monetise the used game market.

I would be a bit more hesitant in just blaming used games etc for what has happened to numerous developers and a few publishers in recent years.

THQ in particular went down for a whole host of reasons, not just any one convenient bogey man.
Things such as the gamble of getting involved in some risky hardware such as the uDraw tablet for the Wii and further expanding that risk by releasing versions for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Hardware = very expensive to make compared to software.
Add to that a run of releasing several mediocre games (at best) and they eventually went under.

Games developers and publishers don't have an automatic right to exist and be successful if they make miscalculations or fail to deliver quality on a consistent basis.
Look what happened to Atari and the whole video game crash.

Or Sega.
While the Dreamcast definitely put them back on the right track, the damage done to their reputation from the Mega-CD, 32X and Saturn (they completely discontinued support after less than 4 years) left many people far to weary to take the plunge again.

EA originally said that the reason they introduced online passes was because used game players weren't paying their way in terms of the costs associated with online multiplayer. After online passes were introduced, we all thought that EA would keep games running for longer with their new source of cash... but no... still only 2 or 3 years for the annual titles.

You buy it for a full £40 but they say "Oh... sorry... after 2/3 years you can't play it online despite having paid full wack.."

They are crooked gits.

They just wanted more money but didn't want to offer anything in return.

They will implement something to get their money back. They always do! That's why they're such a huge publisher they aren't daft let's put it that way.

The back track on DRM will now influence other areas and these companies will have to look to other revenue streams to keep afloat else what happened to THQ will be far more common!

Online passes didn't bother me either. If I didn't have one, then I didn't play online. Simple as that. But the thought of micro-transactions making their way into my single player experience saddens and worries me.

This is the only form of drm/dlc (or whatever it's called) that I supported.
You buy a game get everything, you buy it pre-owned then you get SP but not MP because it costs money to run the servers. One thing is a product, the other is closer to being a service.
But now we get day one dlc, pre-order bonuses, more dlc, micro-transactions.

It's a shame, EA calculated the money they make from dlc & microtransations was more then online passes. So they ditched one and went full out on another. I would prefer if it was the other way round
