Would rather innovate than replicate what has already been done.

Speaking to Kotaku at GDC last week, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed the platform holder will look to continue to innovate in the video game space and believes it would feel embarrassed to be where Sony and Microsoft are today - attempting to gain some of Nintendo's market share with their own motion controllers.

"For us high definition by itself is not the next frontier," said Reggie when talking about the follow-up to the Wii. "For us we need to provide a whole new compelling experience in our next generation."

"When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console. What that includes we'll see. I think Mr. Miyamoto himself has said that he is very interested in a high-definition experience, but to be 120 per cent crystal clear, HD by itself in our view is not enough to go for a new console past the Wii."

He added that innovation and mainstream appeal remains at the forefront of Nintendo's design process.

"It will be mainstream. It will be encouraging more and more consumers to get into this category that we love. It will provide new, unique, compelling experiences that are meaningful to that large potential consumer base.

"Those are the principles that drive us."

Fils-Aime also took a jibe at Sony's PS Move and Microsoft's Natal controllers.

"I think a hallmark of Nintendo is that we are constantly trying to innovate," he said. "I think we would have been embarrassed to do what our competitors are currently doing."

He concluded by saying the Wii "still has a very long, very vibrant life in front of it".

Graphics DOES NOT EQUAL innovation! Lets be frank here, new game IP's? If you have a catalogue as rich as Nintendo (mario, kart, zelda, smash bros, olympics - its becoming one, pikmin, metroid) you mine them! Its economics 101.
And new ways of entertainment? So far everything released for the Move has looked like a higher-res version of mini-game central ala Wii.

The eye was a desparate move by Sony to come up with something 'innovative' that fell flat on its arse when people realised what a tit they looked bouncing an on-screen ball with their hand - its only now when they need a way to avoid Nintendo's motion control patent that they use the previously defunct camera to detect a giant glowing bollock on the end of a grey wii remote.

And lastly - welcome to the weekends argument that "yes the Wii is just a gamecube with motion controls." But do you know what? It did innovate. it created a whole new way of playing games, even old folks homes bought it by the bucket load so that the blue rinse brigade could play bowling with the knowledge of a fresh colostomy bag being less than a shout out to a nurse away!

So I dont know whats worse, either the fact that 1) you seem to have defeated and contradicted your own argument in your own paragraph, 2) you dont know your arse from your elbow, 3) you are trying to come down on nintendos side but rabid fanboyism still shines through or 4) due to poor grammatical command I have failed to comprehend the argument you are trying to make.

So sod it i'll make a mix of all four!

Truth be told Sony, then MS are the real innovators here.. Not only is sony making new game IP's (Which nintendo lacks) there looking into other ways for entertainment (3D gaming, Motion Controls, PS EYE, and so forth).. don't come with that BS nintendo.. the wii is practically a "Gamecube" with motion controls.. yes I said it, GAMECUBE!!.. Try that for innovation!!

i bought it precisly because the dev is going out of business and I regret not buying it sooner!

The music is fantastic, I care about the story, I love it, my mrs loves it and my 4 year old daughter loves it.

Say what you want about that "fat plumber" but he has been a world wide icon with a ***** cartoon, a ***** hollywood film and even a Ron jeremy classic based on him!

5 GTs plus 2 "demos" and a PSP version vs how many fat plumber games that were designed for half a dozen pixels, and it shows.I hate the design of Mario,my 5 year old loves it.You have fun with it and enjoy Little Kings Story because it's a 3rd party game where the dev is going out of business. Why?Everyone buys the same bloody Mario games and not many non Ninty games.

So tell me, how many gran turismo's have there been? God of war? yes its awesome but see that number 3 on the end? That means there have been not one...but TWO before it!

If Sony could have a character as Iconic as Mario - someone known the whole developed world over and recognised by young and old they would remove their bottom two ribs, bend over and suck their cock all day if they had to, to get him on their books.

instead you get yet another final fantasy 13 or whatever it is now - now with hi def cut scenes - WHOOOOOOOO.

Uncharted - looks good and everyone says its great same goes for heavy rain so it doesnt look like a complete "swing and a miss" at your troll post.

Having played Forza, Pgr, Gran turismo and Mario kart my game is the one on the kids console with bright colours, a turtle driving a 4x4 monster truck on a big bright yacht or castle. Now if you will forgive me I'm off to play Little Kings Story...

This is one of those topics where I need to severely limit how much time I spend on it because I could literally write for pages and pages about this.

Firstly, the implication of what Reggie says is how MS and Sony should be embarrassed for reverting their opinion on motion control after having spent the last 3 years ripping it out of Nintendo for their approach. They should feel embarrassed, not for the product they're providing, but for why they're doing it given their stance over the past 3 years.

That's what I have to say on the subject. There are lots of comments I'd like to take issue with, but ultimately it mostly boils down to 'we have no idea what Nintendo are planning, so don't make assumptions'.

For a games company who has re-hashed the same lame gaming icons for decades, they shouldn't really question the innovations of either Sony or Microsoft. Don't get me wrong, both Sony and Microsoft are plainly after the casual market and it's profit margin, but for me games do the talking and Nintendo hasn't impressed me for years in that area.

I know there are millions of Nintendo fans who weep at the very idea of yet another Mario, Zelda, or Metroid, but once again all I see is the same lame gaming icons forced into different molds with silly wii-remote controls. Bollocks to that.

In reality Nintendo has always been light hearted and casual when they attempted to be grown up the console failed. Super Mario is hardly a character you'd associate as being hardcore. All that's happened is you have matured and choices have changed.

3D is not going to distribute fast enough to impact.

Both Sony and Microsoft are innovative they've taken a product that has dominated the market and progressed it. That's how we innovate. Someone takes a product and makes it better. Nice to see Nintendo getting in on the console wars banter for once. They must be worried. Prob cause they realised someone has ripped them off and only charge £25
