Bigger screens, audio enhancements and digital camera.

Earlier today at its Fall Press Conference Nintendo announced the Nintendo DSi, a new version of its market-leading Nintendo DS.

As expected the new handheld will feature audio enhancements and digital camera - it will be possible to transfer photos to the Wii. The unit will also be a little slimmer (12 per cent) and feature screens which are 17 per cent larger than those on the DS Lite. The DSi will also sport an SD memory card slot and a built-in browser.

Nintendo is also extending its digital distribution service to the DS. The DSi Shop will be home to DSiWare with software available at a range of price points: free, 200 points, 500 points and "Premium" or 800 points. New DSi owners will be given 1000 free points which are valid until March 2010.

Regarding release dates, the DSi will launch in Japan on November 1 and will retail at 18,900 yen (£100). Black and white models will be available at launch. As for a European release date, Nintendo has told GamesIndustry.biz that a spring 2009 debut is being targeted.

"We are aiming to launch DSi in Europe in spring 2009," said a Nintendo spokesperson. "As it's too early to confirm specifics on the European / UK launch we will not be offering further comment at this time."
