GameSpy's new Wii middleware could enable unified Wii friend lists, but Nintendo won't be using the tools in this way.

Despite winning much praise for its free online gaming service for the Nintendo DS - later this year for the Wii - the inability to have a unified friends list is perhaps the service's most disappointing feature.

However, it turns out that GameSpy's multiplayer/community middleware which is to be used in Wii titles will support a unified list. The problem being that Nintendo doesn't want the tools to be used in this way.

A GameSpy rep told a Nintendo Revolution blogger that "Wii friend lists are game-specific," despite the technology supporting "features that could span multiple games".

For its part, Nintendo believes non-unified friend lists is "the right thing to do."

The GameSpy document says that each game has its own friend 'LIST', not 'CODE.' This just means you can register your friends out of your Master Wii Friend Lists to each of your online games according to taste, keeping your Tetris Buddies out of your Metroid Prime 3 friend list unless YOU want them in. See?
