Yesterday's announcement was to give the industry a heads up.

Nintendo has confirmed that not only will it unveil further details about its recently announced Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming console at E3 in June, but attendees will be invited to play on it too.
"We wanted to give the gaming industry a head's up about what to expect from Nintendo at E3," said Ken Toyoda, chief spokesman at Nintendo. "We’ll invite people to play with the new device then."
The Nintendo 3DS will go on sale at some point in the platform holder's upcoming fiscal year - ending March 31, 2011.
Rumours emerged yesterday that the handheld will utilise parallax barrier technology, enabling players to experience 3D without wearing glasses.

Which is good for me, because by next year I might actually be able to afford one.
