The next generation Xbox, named simply 'Xbox', will be announced on May 21, technology blogger Paul Thurrott has said during the latest "What The Tech" podcast.

"So the new Xbox that comes out this year will just be the Xbox," said Thurrott.

"Durango is going to be expensive [laughs], you know $500, $300 for the subscription model, that kind of thing," he added.

And it's more bad news for those against always connected devices.

"Going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes," said Thurrott. "And that's all I have, but it does say that."

Of course this may have changed, but it doesn't sound promising.

Thurrott also claims that plans to release a digital-only next Xbox designed as a media box have been put on hold.

"We have talked for a while about this notion that there might be another version of the Xbox that was just aimed at entertainment - a non-gaming device. That device was code-named 'Yumo' and they're not making it," he claimed. "They may make one in the future, but it's not happening this year."

Recent rumours that the Xbox's reveal has been pushed back also seem on the money, with Thurrott pointing to a May 21 announcement.

"Originally, they were going to announce this thing in April 24, now they're going to announce it May 21," he said. "We know there are events occurring this year where we're going to learn more about Durango."

And the plan is to roll out the new console in November.

"Early November, yeah," Thurrott claimed. "E3 is going to occur. BUILD is going to occur in San Francisco in June when they're going to talk about the developer story because it's a Windows 8 device. It's going to have the same, or basically the same, developer tools and developer APIs and all that kind of stuff."

Thurrott was also rather bemused at the negativity towards the next Xbox.

"I think there's a lot information to come, but I look at all this stuff that I've seen about Durango and I think, 'it's all positive.' I don't really see any bad news here at all. Like to me, everything I've seen about this is really positive. It's amazing to me that, based on like no information at all, everyone is like freaking out about everything."

However, right now these rampant rumours are all the news we have and Microsoft can't comfirm or deny their validity without, confirming the xbox announcement itself.

At least if these rumours are true, when they are confirmed after the announcement, Microsoft can do everything in their power to try to cover up these negative issues, with as many positive points as they can think.

And who knows, some of these rumours may turn out to be false after all!

Surely unconfirmed negativity is better than confirmed, factual negativity? The latter allows no room for doubt.

But the first one was called Xbox, too. It'll be like Apple's new iPad. It wasn't called iPad 4, just iPad.

What's in a name, though?

They need to get this thing into the public eye and fast. before the negativity spiral gets out of control. If there's going to be negatively at least let it be based on facts that they have released instead of rumour and hearsay.

I can't see many getting it confused with the current and last generation, though it does mean 360 owners will need to say '360' when referring to it if they're talking about something specific. I actually quite like the simplicity of the name if it's true, it's more appealing than the other rumours surrounding it right now :)

Wouldn't just calling it the xbox again make things annoyingly confusing.
