Microsoft's next-generation Kinect sensor will detect eye movement and automatically pause video content when the viewer turns their head away from the TV, a new report has claimed.

According to a report on The Verge, the next Kinect "will play a role in [Microsoft's] TV focus" for the next Xbox, which the site claims will also hook up to TV cable boxes to allow Microsoft's console to "overlay a UI and features on top of an existing TV channel or set-top box".

"We're told that this is a key part of the next-generation Xbox and that it will go a step further than Google's TV implementation thanks to Microsoft's partnerships with content providers," the site states. "Extended support for various cable services will be rolled out gradually, but the basic functionality will be available at launch."

Prior rumours suggest that Microsoft's next-gen Kinect sensor will come packaged with every next-gen Xbox console.

The sensor's technology could also tie in with a patent filed by Microsoft last year, which suggests that the firm could be planning to include an advanced form of DRM with its next Xbox. The technology is said to detect the number of people viewing video content and issue licenses accordingly.

Rumours posted elsewhere this morning suggest that Microsoft is planning to launch two new consoles later this year - the next Xbox and a new 'Xbox Mini'.
