Microsoft is set to launch MyPunchcard, a new 'Play To Earn' Xbox LIVE Rewards scheme that rewards Xbox LIVE Gold members for purchasing XBLA titles, next Monday, April 1.

The tier-based scheme offers players bonus Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions and free avatar items and Microsoft Points for playing and buying XBLA games.

Playing 20 hours of "any combination of arcade games" will entitle users to a free avatar item, while those who purchase any four XBLA games for 400 MSP or more will receive a one month Xbox LIVE Gold membership.

Meanwhile, those who spend 3200 MSP on XBLA games will receive 800 Microsoft Points in return.

All Xbox LIVE Arcade games qualify for the rewards, Major Nelson states. Windows 8 and Windows Phone games, however, are not eligible.

To participate in the scheme you'll need to be an Xbox LIVE Gold member and have signed up to Xbox LIVE Rewards.

The scheme joins Microsoft's previously announced birthday initiative, which rewards players with 20 Microsoft Points during the month of their birthday.

Even if I did buy XBLA games, this wouldn't encourage me to buy loads more. This looks a lot like the Shell Driver's Club card I got recently. I worked out, on that scheme, that if I filled my car up twice a month at Shell garages I'd get a £5 fuel voucher after a year. VALUE.

@Endless, I couldn't agree more. Though I think it's a pretty good idea.

I suspect Battleblock Theatre next week will be the last thing I buy on XBLA anyway. The service is just too expensive for me.

It's not a bad idea if the balance is right. They want people to buy things when they come out because the figures will look good and it will encourage even more developers and publishers, customers always want an incentive. This covers both bases.

It depends if you were buying the games amyway. Might be nice if they do another Summer of Arcade, especially if they have the usual "Buy them all, get some points" promotion.

I think it probably works out cheaper just waiting for sales than actively buying 3200 points to get 800 back. It'd take longer, and the £2.50 worth of XBox Live subscription is a nice bonus I guess.
