Can recognise any pose in just 10 milliseconds.

According to a New Scientist report, Microsoft's Project Natal will utilise approximately 10-15 per cent of the Xbox 360's computing resources. The figure comes from Natal's lead developer Alex Kipman.

"Natal has to work on the existing hardware without taking too much hardware processing away from the games developers," explained Kipman.

Given the massive processing power motion capture usually requires, the technology had to be stripped down to a 50MB software package that can recognise 31 different body parts in any video frame. It can recognise any pose in just 10 milliseconds.

"When we train this 'brain' we are telling it: this is the head, this is the shoulder. And we're doing that over millions of frames," said Kipman. "When it sees a new image it can tell you the probability it's seeing a certain body part based on that historical information."

Kipman continued: "It correctly positions your hand even if it's held behind your back. It knows the hand can only be in one place."

Earlier this week Project Natal was confirmed for release in holiday 2010.

I think that they should leave Natal until the next Xbox.
They have now lost THIS console war, as of last year, so they should just count their losses and then have another strong launch, provided that it launches at the same time as another console. Which is probably won't but still.

Here is my problem with Natal:

Is Natal for VR or Game interaction?

I believe a NEW XBOX is needed.

Another core just for Natal and 3D with USB 3.0. In addition, 3D and Natal should be the next gen experience. New GPU with HDMI 1.4 required.

I am looking forward to this technology.

However, what is the "decent price"? I have not seen that yet.

Watch the Tech Video on the homepage. It is so much more than the Eye Toy or MS Cam!

31 body parts?

Head, arm, hand, leg, foot, fingers, toes, eyes, nose, mouth, ears. That's 11 I can think of...

Is it being made so if aliens invade they'll be able to play too?

It is an absolute genius concept and I am looking extremely forward to trying it out and casting my view on it. Hopefully it works as well as it appears to.
