Joystiq reports that Microsoft is preparing a new Xbox 360 controller with a unique d-pad designed to appeal to fighting game fans.

According to a trusted source, the new controller's d-pad will have the ability to rotate 90 degrees, raising the pad by approximately 60mm.

What's not clear is whether the new controller will replace those currently sold, or will be offered as an additional product.

I must have missed Sony offering me a free Dual Shock 3 to replace my non-rumbling pad.

Well backwards compatibility is like a bag of dinosaur bones precious to some, but to some others, just a bunch of meaningless fossils irrelevant to modern times.

Though I do respect the days of old in gaming, I see no real reason to look back and live in the past. .

As far as Linux, who cares? Thats why 99% of us have computers. Gaming cosoles are game machines, to me everthing else is just fringe benefits.

I do however agree with a earlier post about the controller, Sony should have given a new replacement duelshock 3, but overall it is quite obvious in quality and durabilty Sony takes center stage hands down.....

I have lost respect for MS completely due to the poorly built systems, and poor alienated customers struggling to keep up with the rising costs of LIVE, and costs of all the replacement consoles, controllers, and gimmicky hardware, ect.

Or a PS2 to replace your non backward compatible PS3?
Or a PC to replace your non functioning PS3 Linux setup?

I bought a New 250g Forza Elite this time last yr & i have been trying to sell mine for 3mths , in shops, newspaper & online but nobody's wants it & its worth naff all . The Live price hike doesn't really affect you if you shop around online & if you a fight game fan (old Wes ) then you will buy a new controller but tbh I have been unimpressed by my 360 & if it wasn't for the Sky multiroom i would have fleebayed it by now . The new S has the stuff folk want & @ the same price , just like Vista they have made old consoles worthless just like the did to xp pc's , even if ppl prefer em. I wish i had never rebought one and it seeing sat in my bedroom gathering as much dust as my Wii really does grate. Folk want new stuff & with Kinect being overpriced another controller may help stabalize the dent in sales lol.

Why on earth would they offer replacements? It's not like people are entitled to have a better dpad...

And owning both does not preclude you from bias.

LOL What's not clear is whether the new controller will replace those currently sold, or will be offered as an additional product. When have you known Microsoft to LOOK OUT FOR THEIR COSTUMERS ? The controller will NOT be offered as a replacement and it WILL be sold at the same price as the current ones after they remove them from the shelves and 360 FANBOYS will not mind paying for them... AGAIN. Yes, I own a 360 and a PS3.

The first one on the first xbox wasn't very good, thought it was too big and was more of a stearing wheel.

Where is the d-pad gonna go then like?

It has generally been said that the Xbox 360 controller is absolutely spot on with the exception of the d-pad. I'm surprised it has taken them this long to change it, though. I don't care at all because I never use it anyway.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the 360 control pad, (So much that I've ordered a XCM cross battle adapter so I can use it on my PS3 as the PS3 pad is a piece of crap!), however the D-pad is pretty poor so I am glad to hear this news! (although I don't know if I'll be buying a new pad as i have about six 360 pads now and i don't play many games where the D-pad is that much of an issue).
