Microsoft expects this holiday season to see dramatic growth in its Xbox One user base with potentially tens of millions of Xbox 360 gamers making the jump to Xbox One, global marketing boss Aaron Greenberg has told GameSpot.

Speaking about the imminent launch of backwards compatibility on Xbox One, Greenberg commented: "I think it's a huge benefit. There's tens of millions of Xbox 360 fans that are out there that are still playing on Xbox 360 and they're waiting for the right time and the right reason to migrate over to Xbox One.

"Whether they've been waiting for the first true next-gen Halo with Halo 5 or if they've been waiting for solutions like backwards compatibility, we do expect to see a pretty massive migration this holiday of those fans. And being able to continue to get the value in the game purchase you've invested and take that value with you to Xbox One is the key idea behind that and we're excited to deliver that for fans."

Given Sony's success with the PS4, announcing it has sold over 29 million units worldwide, Microsoft certainly needs to begin seeing more of its loyal Xbox 360 customers making the transition to Xbox One.

MS should have stuck to their guns (the cloud, sharing data loads with the console for example, was interesting) but instead listened to the demographic that didn't even "loyally" purchase an Xbone anyway. Now it seems they are reaching for higher frame rates on titles such as Halo 5 whilst sacrificing visual flare, in an attempt to gain an advantage over Sony.

I love apprehensive hyperbole in marketing statements. "Pretty massive" is a new favorite. They might not be far off the mark though. I know PS2 backwards compatibility was one of the only reasons I bought a PS3 so early in its lifecycle. I can easily see 360 owners making the jump as their libraries increase in compatibility.

All Microsoft can do is bring the games to the gamers, that's all we ask, i don't want to stream my Xbone to my PC, i don't want all this integration, i want things simple again, you should have just given us a gaming console, the Xbox 720, instead we got the ONE, a console that doesn't know what it wants to be, the fact is Xbox One has lost the bragging rights war, Sony have that locked down, all you have to do MS is deliver the games, and for the love of satan keep exclusive games exclusive.
