Mark Rein: Unreal Engine 4 running on next-gen systems - people will be shocked when they see it

Epic Games vice president can't name the systems yet.

Unreal Engine 4 is up and running on next-gen systems, according to Epic Games vice president Mark Rein. Sadly he can't confirm what those systems are.

Speaking at the DICE summit, Rein said that the upcoming next-gen game engine is running on a variety of hardware, "including systems we can’t name yet". He also told G4TV that the new engine will be revealed this year.

"People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have," he said.

Presumably the unnameable systems are the next Xbox and PlayStation, although it's not out of the question that Epic has got the engine running on the Wii U - but it's unlikely.

Wii-U's basically PS3 quality from what I've seen, but with a mini-screen-pad-thingie. I don't know, ultimately it will depend on the final specs, as well as how clever the devs are. I'm a graphics whore like the rest of the world, and yes, I WILL oooohhh and aahhhhh with the rest of yous, but to be honest personally I'm getting a bit sick and tired of the constant "improvement" in graphics. Sometimes I wish they would just focus on making really good games that are fun to play, without forcing me to constantly update my systems (just to get better looking body hairs on my characters)...

May I ask why it couldn't run on the Wii-U? I'm fairly sure that the gap between the Wii-U and the next Xbox/PS4 in terms of graphical fidelity won't be anywhere near as big as between the current Wii and Xbox/PS3! Or am I being to presumptuous here?

Some dev team should use the Unreal 4 engine for a Mario Bros. game - set in the world of the film! That would be something special... if only it could run on the WiiU...
