The Buzz: Console also said to support 1080p for games and video.
MaxConsole reports it has obtained leaked specifications of the Wii 2, revealing basic details about the console and a Q3 2010 release date.
The info is reported to have originated from French website Logic-Sunrise.com, which according to MaxConsole has regularly supplied insider knowledge. The leak is said to have come from an internal source of the marketing Nintendo France Service.
We're dubious as to the accuracy of this info, so take the following as nothing more than a rumour, but the Wii 2 is reported to:
- Feature a Blu-Ray drive with a secondary aim of stopping piracy
- Support 1080p for Blu-ray movies and games
- Be scheduled for release in Q3 2010, a worldwide simultaneous launch
The launch will also be supported by a trade in scheme, offering existing Wii owners to offset some of the Wii 2's cost by trading in their Wii.
Furthermore, Nintendo is not expected to officially announced the console until one month before its launch.

That's utter nonsense. Might as well say 'Nintendo plans commercial suicide.

I can imagine some form of leaked memo that simply says "oh btw, the new wii will have bluray" Not exactly concrete. Unless they have something a bit more meaty it's purely rumour mongering.

I can totally believe this rumour could turn out to be true, particularly with Nintendos profits declining. They love jumping the gun with new hardware revisions.

Umm, no. Nintendo would use a proprietary disc format before they used a BluRay drive. That said, stranger things have happened. I think this leak is fabricated, but I still think what it alludes to is mostly accurate. I'm really not sure about BluRay: it could give the format the boost it needs in family lounges, but ultimately this would benefit Sony an awful lot.
Another consideration, however, is the awesome line up they have for late next year on Wii. Are these games going to help the launch of this new system? Don't think so... unless they're tailored towards it, or Wii games magically look awesome when they're rendered on 1080p... oh wait.
