Wishes Activision could provide 'much more value to LIVE players'.

kotick -

Activision boss Bobby Kotick has told The Financial Times that over half of the Xbox LIVE subscriber base does so primarily in order to play Call of Duty games on the service.

"We've heard that 60 per cent of Microsoft's subscribers are principally on LIVE because of Call of Duty," Kotick told The Financial Times. "We don’t really participate financially in that income stream. We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network."

It's almost as if these 60 per cent are paying a subscription for Call of Duty, something Kotick has previously expressed an interest in. Only last month he told the Wall Street Journal that he'd love a subscription-based Call of Duty.

I don't think they'll raise the rrp again, maybe to £60 because of the VAT rise, but they wouldn't even need to do that because retail will be more than happy to take a smaller profit on the game. I think Collectors Editions and DLC are smart. They know they can make a load of cash from map downloads (hell, even I'm half thinking about buying some), so making the first hurdle the highest just wouldn't be a smart move. Sure it'll increase revenue from day 1, but DLC is where the real profits are.

He was talking to the FT at the time so talking about how to squeeze more money out of the franchise was expected. Don't MS provide the infrastructure for people to play their games on? They charge for upkeep?

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think it will be £70, but only because it is Treyarch and not *sigh* Infinity Ward.

I do think that IW will raise the RRP £5 each game.

Also, there will probably be ***** loads of special / collector's edition for it's release. Finally, wouldn't be suprised if people are more; intrigued, by Medal of Honor.

I completely agree with Woffls on this one. CoD Wars, or whatever they called it, would be a great move by Activision. Sure, the internet would cry about it for months until it happened, and then one by one every single one of those players would cough up the subscription fee. This would actually allow Activision to give the game away free. Owait .... Sorry, that's never going to happen. Still, in the meantime, we can all rest assured that the lower price point for map packs and disc releases will keep on rising. What's the betting Black Ops has a £70 RRP? Any takers?

I think it's closer to the truth to say that 60% of XBL subscriptions are for the next biggest shooter. In 2006 it would have been Gears, in 2007 it would have been split between MW and Halo 3. If another shooter "takes over" Call of Duty then that 60% will have changed. It shouldn't be implied that 60% of people on XBL subscribers only have it for Call of Duty and always will.

At the moment all I use XBL for is Call of Duty... but do I have my subscription just to play it? Hell no.

I think what Kotick really wants to do is charge $15 a month for a Call of Duty online experience with new maps, weapons, level caps being added for free. Which, to be fair, would be a good deal for some people.

I think the market is too saturated with war games for COD to think that they could go subscription base. For many people, Bad Company 2 surpassed COD's multiplayer experience. Medal of Honor looks pretty good too. Then there is Killzone 3 and Gears of War 3. If Activision goes subscription based then I'll play something else.

Surely this figure could only have come out because 60% of people on XBL, have Call of duty as their most played online game?

Also, what do Activision stand to gain by this article coming out? Surely they already know that a subscription based Call of Duty would do incredibly well?
