Killer Instinct and Project Spark will both be free-to-play digital downloads available on the day Xbox One launches this year but with a catch. You'll have to pay to get the full experience.

While Project Spark will offer DLC to expand your creations at some point, Killer Instinct, in a way, requires it from the off. Coming from IGN, the starting roster contains a single playable character - Jago - whereas the rest are available if you're willing to use your actual, real-life cash.

The Xbox One will be released 21 November this year at £429.

Definitely MS' idea of free to play.
I can promise you that most of the achievements will be unobtainable without a good dosage of cash, just like Flight.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Part of me is totally against it. In the end, the majority of the players who will take this game seriously will buy all the characters anyway. They will do this to text which characters works well for them, to test frame data and analyse hitboxes. This system, would just be more inconvenient then simply buying a boxed copy, to the majority of players who will take this game seriously.

On the other hand, I think a big barrier to fighting games is the all or nothing nature. You either put in a lot of time learning the nuances of the fighting system/ playing online multiplayer, or you don't and therefore you feel that purchase is wasted. I love Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, but I could never find a game online so I never got much practice, and therefore felt dissatisfied a little with the longevity of the purchase.

In think in this case making it F2P will mean more people will try this game just because it's free, then there ever would if you just bought the game. And League of Legend, whilst a very different game, get's away with being free to play, whilst have a large and roster of characters you need to purchase. If Double helix and Rare does a similar system to LoL then I feel this could be a very good choice.

That is very interesting micro-transactions to supplement game cost.
