Half a year in and the PS Vita has sold under a million units in Japan
Only 790,633 units sold since the handheld's launch on December 17, 2011.
The PS Vita has been available in Japan for over half a year in Japan, but has only sold 790,633 units, reports Famitsu (via Andriasang).
The handheld launched on December 17, 2011 moving 324,859 units in its first week and 72,479 the week after. This means in the six months which followed only 400,000 units were sold.
Software sales are understandably pretty low, with Persona 4 The Golden the best-seller with 188,782 copies.
1: Persona 4 The Golden (188,782)
2: Hot Shots Golf 6 (118,985)
3: Uncharted Golden Abyss (89,390)
4: Gravity Daze/Rush (74,785)
5: Dynasty Warriors Next (74,718)
6: Tales of Innocence R (71,463)
7: Lord of Apocalypse (69,162)
8: Ragnarok Odyssey (65,318)
9: Gundam Seed Battle Destiny (55,527)
10: Disgaea 3 Return (54,902)
According to Famitsu, a Sony rep told the magazine that sales are in line with expectation.

The issue with these figures is that the Vita started really slowly in Japan and therefore never made a big impact at launch. Recent news stories show the massive uptake after several games releases, but Sony now need to take that momentum and add to it with. More games that they want.

Having said that, when I do pick up a portable gaming device nowadays its definitely the Vita I go for, and not for the 3DS, even though I have way more games for that (mostly old DS titles - its amazing how many old RPGs you can pick up 2nd hand for dirt cheap btw). Both console however suffers from a lack of titles I'd have to say...
