Global PS3 sales near 13 million units

Over nine million PlayStation 3 consoles sold between April 07 and March 08.

Sony Corp has announced its full year financial results for the financial year 2007, which includes updated sales figures for its game hardware.

For the twelve month period ended March 31, 2008, 9.24 million PS3s were sold, taking worldwide cumulative sales to 12.85 million units. This compares to 19 million units sold for the Xbox 360 and a staggering 24.45 million units of the Wii.

During the same twelve month period the PS2 sold 13.73 million units and the PSP 13.89 million units.

For the current year, ending March 31, 2009, Sony Corp estimates a further 10 million PS3s, 9 million PS2s and 15 million PSPs will be sold. Interestingly the estimated 10 million PS3 sales does not show any significant growth over financial year 2007.

Well Microsoft is in the same position they were in last gen, Second place, while the previous leader went down to third place and the last place console seller is now first selling over 24 million consoles, Sony is hurt the most as they prove having a powerful console means nothing if it has no software to sell it, also it doesn't help that the average consumer didn't know exactly why the ps3 was priced as high as it was, also Sony isn't marketing the ps3 well, simply boosting it as a Blu-Ray player means nothing especially when Dvd sales completely out do Blu-Ray. Microsoft has learned from first hand experience that software is what makes or breaks a console in terms of success, most people do not use there consoles as movie players, most average consumers for some reason think doing so will harm the console, I have been asked time and time again does playing dvd's in the xbox 360 hurt it, does playing bootleg or burnt movies hurt the console. By the way I work in an electronics store.
