33.5 million PS3s compared to 39 million Xbox 360s.

MCV reports that global PS3 sales now stand at 33.5 million units, up 6.5 million thanks to strong sales in the recent holiday quarter.

Earlier this month Microsoft said that its Xbox 360 had reached worldwide sales of 39 million units, giving the software giant a 5.5 million lead over its competitor.

Earlier this week SCEA's Peter Dille said that it won't be long before the PS3 overtakes the Xbox 360.

"I'm not going to make any predictions for your interview today other than we'll pass them, but you look at where we are today and where they are today, and they had an opportunity to sprint as far ahead of us as possible when they had the head start," said Dille.

"Well, we're breathing down their necks and they can see us in the rearview mirror and it's not going to take too long to pass them."

Given the head start that the 360 had, these figures are very close.

Some of the people need to stop their arguing, stop posting B*llocks, get on their console, and play.

Same position here. Fortunately, I have the money ready and waiting, BUT... I don't feel right buying one yet, what with, like you, a partner and other RL concerns. When a good deal comes up, and more console exclusive games that I personally will play, then and only then may I acquire Sony's machine. (Mature and responsible gamers ftw, eh, old chap? ;))

I just hate it when obviously biased fanbois bash one console whilst blatantly disregarding their own consoles flas. No machine is perfect, or there would be no console wars.

I sometimes regret not owning a PS3 but luckily a good mate buys the games I fancy and I play when I go round. Still can't justify a second console at the moment. Thinking there maybe a few games that make me crave one and when that happens I usually buy. (Saving for my wedding ATM tho lol so missus may have summit to say bout it if I do get one)

That reminds me playing MAG on the weekend in between that and watching the Rugby!

Do envy those with enough disposable cash for the both consoles.

Not even vg.com is safe from narrow-minded fanbois, Karlius, sadly. Why can't we all enjoy all consoles? That would be too easy (too much pocket money, for some...)

Ultimately, who wins out of all this? US the gamers. But, any excuse to bwaaaaaaah anonymously on a public forum will be taken by some. I notice a good few of us provide real names and locations, while a certain vocal minority don't...

I wish just for one second we could have a week where stupid marketing bull ***** was stopped. Will this sell more consoles? No is it a bull sh!t throw away statement yes!

Could the bottom fall out of the 360 tomorrow yes of course it could! Could the bottom fall out of PS3 yes it could! When you idiots criticising start to realise that I'm not criticising Sony I'm criticising the retarded logic that is it's marketing stratergy I think we'd get along great.

You don't hear Nintendo talking sales figures. Why? Because they've p!ssed all over the competition. It's retarded sales banter and absolute bollocks.

TU or TD I speak what I believe I personally don't give a flying Fúck if you TD me makes me laugh wish there were more people on here that had the balls to speak the truth or say something away from the trending line, TU are always nice though lol.

Only one man on here can talk marketing bullsh*t and thats you XD

For example:

"Unless Sony start selling the console at a £1 their not going to be overtaking the 360 in the next couple of years at least" <-- Your maths are sh*t!

"At current sales trends were looking at around 5 years till their level" <--- Sales trend? Didnt know Sony had style :P

But a failure rate at half percent of a console being released is very poor! Micrososft has no choice but to offer the 3 year warranty. I meen can you imagine Nintendo selling the wii and saying "Ok everyone due to the wii motes not responding to 50% of our consoles, were going to up the warranty" I meen i dont know about you but i would be quite pissed off!?

After all the stick you guys have gave sony about the price, lack of games, but when the truth shows that the console's sales in fact could be better than 1st thought you guys start bricking it. Shaaame!

Undeniably so, but at least MS took steps (3 years extended warranty, admission of error, effor at making chpsets more reliable)

Sony, however, charge a huge amount, and think that ignoring the error will make it go away. Apparently, and I'm going by several posts on other forums and a friend who has suffered one failure, the slims are starting to fall victim to the YLoD (but not as much as the 60gb models - the actual worthwhile models). That combined with the Blu-ray drives failing... well, it is an unecapable fact that Sony's hardware isn't anywhere near 100% relaible. If you think MS is the only offendor this gen, that shows the blinkers really are on.

Yeh I'm sure Sony's rate is over 50% off there products LOL. Besides woo had to remake the straps for there remotes cos of them snapping, that's alot of broken tvs aswell. But 50% is alot!

Sold to whom? Retailers or consumers? There's a big difference and Sony usually deals in shipped figures. Either way it's a commendable result, but the rest of this year could be telling when you consider the exclusives that are already announced for 360, not to mention those which aren't.

Another thought while I'm in my 'happy' and 'at peace with the world' way - Nearly 80 million combined sales for Ps3 and the 360 -

WOW!

Gaming as a media truely is a force to be reckoned with!
