FIFA 14 will only be given away free with Day One Edition Xbox One pre-orders, while stocks last, Microsoft social marketing manager Graeme Boyd has clarified on Twitter.

"Had a few questions on this so wanted to clarify," Boyd tweeted, "FIFA 14 will only come free with Xbox One Day One Edition pre-orders, while stocks last."

"If you have already pre-ordered a Day One Edition Xbox One, or pre-order one from now on while stocks last, you will receive FIFA 14 free."

Back at Gamescom the messaging over free FIFA 14 wasn't quite so clear, with an Xbox Wire post stating that "All pre-order Xbox One consoles in Europe will include a digital version of a blockbuster game and the first game included will be the best-selling sports franchise FIFA 14. All pre-orders to date and future pre-orders will include FIFA 14, while supplies last."

In the same blog post it was reported: "In another crowd-pleasing announcement, [corporate VP of Microsoft, Phil] Harrison shared that all pre-order Xbox One Day One Edition consoles in Europe will include FIFA 14."

GAME continues to accept pre-orders for the Day One Edition, but the likes of Amazon has sold out of it launch allocation and is now only accepting pre-orders for the regular edition sans FIFA 14.

"Had a few questions on this so wanted to clarify," Boyd tweeted.

Of course, they could just have said that at the beginning and there wouldn't have been need of clarification.

Then again if they had done that the headlines wouldn't have been quite so spectacularly positive from this move.

Fair enough. In all honesty there had to be a limit to how many free copies they could give.
